Tennessee Williams, American, 1911 -1983

There’s nothing like name recognition, and Williams, one of Key West’s favorite sons certainly had it. Tennessee published 30 plays, an even greater number of short plays, two original screenplays, two television plays, poetry, an autobiography, a novel, two novellas and short stories.

Some of his most famous works include "The Glass Menagerie", "A Streetcar named Desire", "Summer and Smoke", "Cat on a hot tin roof", "Orpheus Descending", "Sweet bird of youth", "The night of the Iguana" and "The Rose Tattoo".

During the filming of the latter in 1955 Williams, Burt Lancaster, Anna Magnani and Frank Merlo posed outside William’s house in Key West which served as a dressing room during the on-location scenes. Williams attented The island premiere which was held at the San Carlos Theatre on Duval street.

Truly famous literary and visual artists are rare enough!
