Priscilla Coote is a tonalist in a colorist world. Immersed
in the saturated hues of the Florida Keys, she distills from it
something entirely different from the common perception, creating a
“parallel universe” of mood and an atmosphere of an earlier time.
After living and painting in the Keys for many years, Priscilla has
succeeded in marrying the somber with the saturated; the shadows of
old wood with the neon electricity of sunlit water, to create her
unique expression of this idyllic environment. She is able to unify
her tonalist’s love of deep shadow and variety of values with the
brilliance of her sunlit surroundings, in a way uniting our present
existence with the whispers of the past.
Priscilla was chosen this year as one of the select participants in
Plein Air Easton, a national painting competition and show, and has
recently won the Wallis Award for Pastels in a national exhibition,
in addition to holding a long-standing string of other First Place
and Best in Show awards. Her work is represented in collections
across the Americas, and in Mexico and Europe.
